THE outrageously spectacular costumes that have enchanted audiences in Coffs Harbour for the past two months will be brought to life for the public in two special theatrical performances.
It is part of a live extension of the ESSSENSSSE exhibition by HOSSEI at the City of Coffs Harbour’s Yarrila Arts and Museum (YAM).
Two free shows will be held – a daytime performance including a wearable workshop from 10am, and an evening gala as part of a YAM Up Late – on Thursday 22 January.
“HOSSEI is one of Australia’s rising contemporary artists and his exhibition at YAM has captured the imagination of children through to seniors and been feted by mainstream media,” Mayor Nikki Williams said.
“These live performances have become something of a trademark of his exhibitions, where performers get inside the art to provide compelling theatre.”
ESSSENSSSE features otherworldly sea creatures in a playful and multi-sensory aquatic-themed ecosystem.
The immersive installation creates a dynamic space for all ages and abilities and invites audiences to celebrate their inner creative spirit and explore art through more than just sight.
The free exhibition at YAM runs through to 1 February.
Museum and Gallery Service Leader Carrie Kibbler said the live performances – the first from noon to 12.30pm near the fig tree outside Yarrila Place – will be a grand spectacle.
“The engaging HOSSEI and his performers will again be the headliners at our YAM Up Late event on the same day, from 5pm to 7pm,” Ms Kibbler said.
“People will be able to explore all of our YAM summer exhibitions, dive into creative art-making, and delight in the dynamic drama of ESSSENSSSE.”
The YAM Up Late line-up includes:
– Collage-making inspired by Deborah Kelly’s exhibition CREATION with artist AlyKat
– Beats by DJ Jemka to set the vibe
– Delicious pizza from OneTwoFive; and
– Handcrafted gin cocktails from Emerald Island Distillery at the YAM Bar.
While the day and evening events are free to attend, people are encouraged to reserve their spot.
Ms Kibbler said this would be one of the last opportunities to experience ESSSENSSSE.
“When you step into the exhibition you leave the real world and enter HOSSEI’s exotic underwater universe.
“It’s a carnival for the imagination.
ESSSENSSSE is a Verge Gallery exhibition curated by Tesha Malott, touring in partnership with Museums and Galleries of NSW, supported by the University of Sydney, and funded by the NSW Government.
