DEAR News Of The Area,
PEOPLE of Coffs Harbour, we are now in the midst of the second bicycle revolution (e-bikes and e-scooters) of modern times.
These new products can increase the range and speed of travel, but early data point to increased risks of death and serious injury.
Even now our Australian governments are working on new rules to minimise these disasters. But it is up to all of us to take care on our wonderful walkways/cycleways/roads, to prevent these accidents from taking place.
The first bicycle revolution of modern times occurred in the 1980s and 1990s, when helmet-wearing was made compulsory.
This revolution saw women take up cycling in considerable numbers, and middle-aged men join in with their striking new lycra outfits!
Bicyclists and fellow-travellers: stay injury-free and out of our local ED (Emergency Department).
Regards,
Andrew BEATTIE,
Retired GP,
Coffs Harbour.
