IT was a fantastic gala day out at the Coffs Synthetics, as the team from Key Community took home the annual Rotary Daybreak Coffs Harbour Walking Football Charity Shield.
Key triumphed under the late evening floodlights in a thrilling 2-0 win over Gosling Group.
Ian Leach, Rotary’s organiser of the tournament, said 15 teams and more than 130 footballers took part, with close to 300 in attendance.
“[The] Unicorns in Tutu’s, Green Machines, the all-female Wally’s from Woolgoolga and the wooden spoon winners Ripper Rotarians, amongst others, ensured the second running of the Walking Football Charity Shield had it all and was a resounding success,” Ian said.
“It was a real community day with a fun and festive atmosphere making the day feel like a true carnival celebration of community and Walking Football.
“The Charity Shield wasn’t just about sport but was also a great philanthropic success thanks to our generous sponsors.”
The Charity Shield raised close to an incredible $15,000 for local youth charities, demonstrating the generosity and community spirit of the participants and supporters.
“It was more than just a football event; it was a gathering of people united by a common goal – to make a difference while having fun.
“The whole day had the feel of a gala, filled with laughter, friendly competition, and the joy of giving back to the community.”
Marily Brien, president of Rotary Coffs Harbour Day Daybreak, told NOTA, “The success of the event ensures that it will likely continue as an annual fund-raising highlight in Coffs Harbour, combining walking football, fun, and philanthropy for years to come.
“A big shout-out also to North Coast Football and Northern NSW Football and the City of Coffs Harbour Major Events team whose advice and guidance was once again invaluable.
“Walking Football is on every Wednesday evening at the Coffs Synthetics at 5:45pm – 6:45pm – all welcome,” concluded Brien.
