DEAR News Of The Area,
IT was great to see Win Howard recognised in the Kings Birthday Honours List.
Back in the early 1950s Win used to catch the same School Special bus as I did that took us from Gladesville’s Terminus bus stop to Fort Street Boys High School on Parramatta Road, Petersham, (which was next door to Brittons Brewery).
At school Win became a prefect and on school cadet days he was on the bus in his army uniform.
I can’t remember whether he was a lieutenant or a captain.
Our paths crossed again when at U3A about 10 years ago. He vainly tried to teach me about the planets and the stars and what else was in the night sky, mainly to no avail though as I was getting a bit rusty by then.
One thing that did stick in my mind, though, was that he told us that back in his working life, his firm provided him with a car parking space in the city.
Made me think that he must have been good to get that.
As for the award, I see that it was for service to the community through a range of organisations.
Good on you Win. Cheers.
Regards,
Fred Appleton,
Coffs Harbour.
