FORMER Australian representative Paul “Blocker” Wilson is set to visit Woolgoolga for next week’s CurryFest Woolgoolga Tri-Nations Cricket Cup.
The former Australian Test cricketer and internationally renowned umpire will take charge of the cricket, as Australia, India, and Nepal meet in a unique three-nation tournament celebrating cricket, culture and community.
The CurryFest Woolgoolga Tri-Nations Cricket Cup will bring together teams across three days of cricket at the Wiigulga Sports Complex.
The action gets under way on Thursday, 24 September, with Australia taking on Nepal.
The opening ceremony will be held on Saturday, 26 September, followed by the grand final between the top two teams.
Paul Wilson represented Australia as a fast bowler, then went on to build an exceptional career as an international umpire.
One of Australia’s most experienced modern match officials, he spent 11 years on the ICC International Panel, officiating international Tests, ODIs and T20 internationals, including matches at the 2019 and 2023 Men’s Cricket World Cups.
Woolgoolga Cricket Club representative Lindsay Mamone said having Wilson involved gave the Tri-Nations tournament an extra dimension.
“We wanted this tournament to be about more than just playing cricket,” he said.
“We want people to come down, enjoy themselves, experience different cultures, watch quality cricket and feel part of something happening in their own community.
“Having someone like Paul Wilson involved is huge for us.
“He has played for Australia, umpired at World Cups and stood in some of the biggest matches in the world.
“To have him coming to Woolgoolga and being part of our tournament is something our local players and community can genuinely get excited about.”
The Tri-Nations Cricket Cup will also hold an important purpose.
Following the devastating flooding in Nepal, Woolgoolga Cricket Club will use the event to support the Australian Red Cross response to the Nepal floods.
The club is encouraging spectators to attend the cricket, enjoy the food and festivities, and make a donation to help people affected by the disaster.
