FOOTBALL: Woolgoolga Wolves win grand final in extra time

WOOLGOOLGA Wolves left it until the death to claim the Men’s Premier League crown, defeating Northern Storm 1-0 with a dramatic extra-time winner in a pulsating grand final at C.ex Coffs International Stadium.

The two sides traded blows throughout a tense 90 minutes, with both defences refusing to yield as chances came and went at either end.

After a gripping contest, the deadlock remained unbroken at full time and sent the match into extra time.

Premier League Golden Boot winner Tai Smith was in the right place at the right time, pouncing to tap the ball home in extra time and send the Woolgoolga faithful into a frenzy.

The late strike sparked wild celebrations as the Wolves secured a dramatic 1-0 victory and lifted the Men’s Premier League grand final trophy.

Woolgoolga coach Joel Finlayson reflected on the hard-fought contest.

“Saturday’s grand final was a tough-fought contest, with both sides creating chances throughout the opening 90 minutes,” he said.

“Gurvir Virk was outstanding after coming on in the 50th minute and, in the 99th minute, delivered a perfectly weighted early cross for North Coast Football Golden Boot and Player of the Year Tai Smith, who finished brilliantly with a left-foot volley.

“I’m incredibly proud of the boys.

“They gave absolutely everything for 120 minutes, and the win was a testament to the time, effort and commitment they’ve put in all year.

“After taking the lead, we kept our heads, stayed disciplined and closed the game out — something we’ve worked on all season.

“They thoroughly deserved that moment.”
