LETTER: Climate change inextricably linked to overpopulation

DEAR News Of The Area,

I SUPPORT Coffs Council’s decision to rescind the declared climate emergency for the local government area (‘Climate Backflip’, Page 1, NOTA, 2/10/26).

Mayor Nikki Williams’ leadership on this issue was important.

In my opinion, the original declaration in 2022 never made any sense and was putting the cart before the horse.

How could a climate emergency be declared before first declaring an overpopulation emergency?

The causes of human-related climate changes are based on pure numbers, such as climate change is inextricably linked to the overpopulation crisis. People with vested interests are forever decoupling climate issues from the elephant in the room – overpopulation, but I’m calling it out.

Mayor Williams’ opposition to blatant wastage of ratepayers money on carbon credits and Scope 3 requirements on beleaguered businesses shows the care and commonsense that Council lacked in their poorly conceived 2022 declaration.

Regards,

Richie Tassicker,

Toormina.
