International Repair Day is all about mending and recycling

INTERNATIONAL Repair Day on Saturday 17 October encourages local repair and reuse businesses to keep the story going on why mending makes sense.

The campaign is a global celebration of everyone who makes repairs happen in their community: the tradespeople and everyday menders who choose to fix and repair rather than replace.

On the day, Bellingen Bowerhouse in Raleigh will be hosting a Repair Day Cafe from 9am until 12-noon.

Community members can bring in clothing or household items in need of repair and have them fixed for free.

People can bring in clothing and other textile items such as soft toys and bed linen, small household items including small furniture, bric-a-brac, battery-operated items and small mechanical items, along with small engines such as pumps, brush cutters, lawnmowers, and chainsaws.

Also marking the occasion, MidWaste are calling on repair and reuse businesses across the Mid North Coast

to join the Reuse and Repair Directory and help more residents choose repair over waste.

Since launching, the free platform has connected residents across Coffs Harbour, Nambucca, Bellingen, Port Macquarie and Kempsey with local repairers, second-hand stores and community reuse initiatives,

covering everything from clothing and appliances to furniture and bicycles.

MidWaste is now inviting more local businesses to list their services for free, as part of a new campaign,

Keep the Story Going, encouraging residents to give items a second life rather than send them to landfill.

“International Repair Day is about recognising the skills and people who make repair possible in our community,” said MidWaste Programs Officer Danielle Blenkhorn.

“Joining our Directory gives repair and reuse businesses a unique, free way to reach customers across the region.”

In NSW, reuse and resale saves the community $432 million each year and diverts about 49,900 tonnes from landfill.*

Repair and reuse businesses can register for free at midwaste.org.au/register-to-reuse-and-repair.

Residents can browse the Directory, share it, or suggest a business be added at midwaste.org.au/reuse-and-repair.
