AFTER a successful event in July, more than 90 ‘makers’ again turned Sawtell Cinema into a craft room.
Knitting needles clicked, paintbrushes daubed and a basket materialised on the night of Wednesday, 28 October, as creatives filled Sawtell Cinema for the second Makers’ Movie Night.
The house lights were dimmed so people could knit, crochet, paint and weave throughout the film, turning the theatre into a colourful, busy, community craft room.
This event paired a screening of Jane Austen’s ‘Sense and Sensibility’ with the chance to keep crafting in the dark, and drew makers from across the Coffs Coast and beyond.
Attendees came from Glenreagh, Arrawarra, Woolgoolga, Nambucca Heads and even one from Tuncurry, as well as Sawtell.
Some had been part of the previous Makers’ Movie Night screening of ‘Little Women’.
One woman proudly wore a garment she had begun knitting at that first session.
Stephanie Sims, one of the organisers, said: “It was wonderful to see so many people here tonight, including first- timers.
“People clearly love the chance to bring their projects along and enjoy a film together.”
Sawtell Cinema manager Susanne Young said the cinema was delighted with the response.
“We’re thrilled to welcome the makers of the region into our theatre, and seeing the whole room so engaged is a joy for our team,” Ms Young said.
“The response has been so strong that we plan to make Makers Movie Night a quarterly event.”
Attendees also heard about the 16 Days of Activism by Zonta and the Growing Respect Awareness & Community Empowerment (GRACE) Domestic Violence Committee, which raises awareness of violence against women and girls.
Knitters and crocheters are invited to create bright-coloured shapes that will be joined together for a community yarn-wrapping installation.
Contributions need to be delivered by 10 November – contact Jenny Wiseman on zontacoffsharbour24@gmail.com to arrange collection.
The next Makers’ Movie Night will screen ‘Emma’ at Sawtell Cinema on Wednesday 3 February.
