TWO medical interns have joined the Coffs Harbour Health Campus.
Dr Phoebe Parodi and Dr Tammy Middleton are among 25 medical interns to join hospitals across the Mid North Coast Local Health District (MNCLHD).
They will work alongside the District’s highly skilled and experienced medical staff.
Having completed their orientation, the junior doctors are already providing care to local patients.
Interns are medical graduates who have completed their medical degree and are required to complete a supervised year of practice to gain general registration.
They will be starting their internship through a training program with networked hospitals throughout the state, providing formal and on-the-job training.
For Dr Parodi, being based in Coffs Harbour for her study with Charles Sturt University, and now coming in as a Junior Medical Officer, has given her a chance to get to know all the sites and facilities, all the doctors, nursing staff and allied health services.
“It’s given me a huge understanding of how this network works,” she told News Of The Area.
“We have been very lucky in that our last three years of training and study has been extremely clinical based.
“We were very well supported in our training, talking to other doctors and simulations we were involved with.
“I feel like this has had a real impact on the emergency situations we are presented with.”
Dr Tammy Middleton grew up in Coffs Harbour and says she has always been a country girl, having studied in Orange and on the Mid North Coast.
“I’m looking forward to starting my career back home, close to my family and my community.
“I got into medicine because I just wanted to make a difference somewhere and to someone.
“I’ve gone through personal experiences with my family having to travel for healthcare, and I wanted to be part of the solution.
“If you already have your roots in the country then I think you are more inclined to continue going back to those communities to provide healthcare.”
