THOUSANDS of vintage Phantom comics will be on sale at Coffs Rotary’s upcoming BookFest community fundraiser.
The donation of historic comics came about when longtime Coffs Rotary member Michael Brown was visiting with his brother Kevin, in Sydney.
“He’s at that stage where he’s getting rid of stuff he no longer needs and said, ‘take them up and sell them’,” Michael told News Of The Area.
He was referring to the boxes of vintage comics collected over many years, all in very good condition.
“There has to be a couple of thousand of the comics,” Michael said.
He asked his brother to consider selling them himself, but Kevin was adamant that he wants their sale to go towards the good works run by Coffs Harbour Rotary.
BookFest serves as a vital fundraising event for ongoing Rotary projects such as the Life Saving Rescue Tubes, Shearwater Lodge, Disabled Surfing and other new initiatives in the wider community.
“We receive book donations all year round, however occasionally we are donated very special books and items to sell,” BookFest Coordinator Glen James said.
“When told of the donation of Phantom Comics we asked ‘why us, why not sell them yourself’, but the donor commented that he would rather them go to the BookFest where he knows the money will go back into Rotary charities, community projects in Coffs Harbour, and beyond.
“Ideally, we would like to sell them as one lot during BookFest, probably as an auction.”
No-one is guessing how much the comics will raise but the collection is sizable and in excellent condition.
It would be very attractive to comic collectors or specific Phantom collectors.
Held at Norm Jordan Pavilion, BookFest runs for eight days from March Saturday 14 to Saturday 21 March.
