146th anniversary of the South Solitary Island Lighthouse

ONE hundred and forty-six years since its first illumination, the South Solitary Island Lighthouse optic will be lit to celebrate the milestone on Sunday 15 March.

Following meticulous restoration work, the historic optic was installed in a place of honour at the Jetty Foreshores in 2024 where the party will take place on Sunday.

The Friends Of South Solitary Island Lighthouse Inc (FOSSIL) – the volunteer group dedicated to preserving the history of the lighthouse – are hosting the gathering.

Given the lighthouse’s sole role in guiding ships from its lonely post since 1880, there are many tales of love and loss still being shared by the many who have an interest in the guardian and its past.

Dedicated to the unique history of the island and the lives of the keepers and their families, FOSSIL members are always happy to chat with the community to keep this local history alive.

The island’s legacy lives on in Coffs Harbour, particularly through the lighthouse’s original first-order Fresnel lens, affectionately known as the optic.

“This optical marvel, crafted in 1879 by British makers Chance Brothers, was at the heart of the lighthouse for nearly a century and played a pivotal role in illuminating the night for mariners along the eastern seaboard,” FOSSIL president Grant Cairncross said.

After the lighthouse was automated in 1975, the optic was removed and stored ashore before being installed at its current home at the Jetty.

“The 146th lighting event brings the community together for an evening of stories, celebration and heritage,”

Vice President of FOSSIL Penny Westman added.
