A DEADLY dog-on-dog attack has claimed the life of a beloved pet in Woolgoolga.
Returning home from a night out on Saturday, 28 February, septuagenarians Veronica and John Fallon entered their lounge room to discover a nightmare scene, with their 9-year-old Jack Russell Terrier, Obi, dead on the floor from an attack.
Their other dog, a Shih Tzu, was found cowering behind a couch in fear.
The couple had only been gone from the house for two hours.
Because they have intact fences, the Fallons leave a back door open for their dogs to use the yard.
“We came home and thought we had been broken into,” Mrs Fallon said.
“My husband went inside and came back and said ‘Obi’s dead’.
“Obi was my husband’s shadow, so we are devastated.”
Neighbours later told the Fallons they had seen two dogs which looked like pitbulls trying to jump fences.
These dogs had apparently broken through the paling fence at the back of the home prior to the attack.
Later, when police arrived, Mrs Fallon said the dogs came through the back door again, wagging their tails and trying to lick people before being returned by officers to their owners.
According to Mrs Fallon, a City of Coffs Harbour ranger came the following day and said the dogs would not be put down, quoting relevant legislation.
A spokesperson for the City of Coffs Harbour said the City has investigated, taken enforcement action and issued fines of $1,300 for each animal involved.
