INTERNATIONAL community running event Parkrun has launched at Bongil Bongil National Park, giving locals and visitors a second location in the region.
Parkrun is a program of five kilometre events for runners, walkers and volunteers that takes place every Saturday morning at more than 2,000 locations in 23 countries across five continents.
The new Parkrun has been welcomed as an important addition to the local running scene, complementing the long-established Coffs Harbour event at Park Beach, and strengthening the region’s reputation for community sport and active tourism.
Keelan Birch, one of the co-event directors and a driving force behind major running initiatives on the Coffs Coast, said the new Parkrun reflects the growing appetite for accessible community events in natural settings.
“It’s about creating something welcoming, free and sustainable that gets people moving in one of the most beautiful parts of our region,” Keelan said.
The establishment of Bongil Bongil Parkrun has been supported by a $8,600 donation from the Rotary Club of Coffs Harbour.
Its ongoing contribution to community events and sports tourism continues to play a key role in enabling grassroots initiatives like this to thrive alongside major events such as the Coffs Harbour Running Festival.
“A key feature of the new Parkrun is its location within Bongil Bongil National Park with it being one of, if not the only, Parkrun in a National Park in NSW.
“Special acknowledgment has been given to National Parks staff for their cooperation and guidance in making the event possible in such a sensitive and significant area.”
Mr Birch said the organisers are encouraging locals of all fitness levels to take part each week, whether running, jogging, walking, or volunteering.
“Like all Parkruns, the event is free and community-driven, designed to be inclusive and welcoming for everyone.
“With Coffs Harbour now home to two Parkruns, the growth reflects the strength of the local running culture and the increasing desire for regular, social, outdoor activity.”
