Storm honour club legend Mitch Weeden in moving win

The Northern Storm paid an emotional tribute to club legend Mitch Weeden before continuing their unbeaten start to the HIT105.5 Men’s Premier League season with a 3-0 victory over Urunga last Sunday at Korora.

Players, coaches and supporters paused in the 22nd minute to applaud the life of the Northern Storm vice-president, goalkeeper, coach and friend, with the gesture honouring the number 22 jersey he wore with distinction throughout his involvement with the club.

Prior to kick-off, Weeden’s number 22 jersey was placed on the field as both teams observed a minute’s silence. In a moving tribute, the club officially retired the jersey number as a mark of respect.

“This weekend was a great way for our teams to return to the pitch and honour Mitch,” said Northern Storm club president Craig Caruana.

“He was such a big part of our club and playing group, and there’s no doubt he will be missed, but he will never be forgotten.”

The Storm struck first in the ninth minute when Urunga failed to clear a corner, allowing Griffin Hill to pounce and drive a powerful finish into the corner of the net.

The home side doubled its advantage just two minutes later through Mark McCarthy, leaving Urunga with a mountain to climb.

Thomas Frewen completed the scoring in the 69th minute as the Storm secured another convincing three points.

Caruana reflected on the match with mixed emotions.

“At times, we were a bit sluggish and overall, the game was very slow and probably more to do with the heavy pitch, but it has been a big week or so and I was just happy to get three points and walk away with a clean sheet.

“We controlled the game from the start and moved the ball around well, creating more than enough opportunities but we wasted too many clear chances.

“We need to be better than that with some big games over the next few weeks.”

The victory maintains Northern Storm’s perfect record, with six wins from six matches to start the season.

Their toughest test may await next when they travel to face Woolgoolga who are also unbeaten in a clash of the titans on Saturday, June 13, at 5pm.
