LETTER: Billionaire’s buddy Pauline not likely to put people first

THIS letter in response to Peter Williams (‘Looking for a Party that will put people first’, Coffs Coast NOTA, 7/8/26).

Peter, thank you for your response.

I am well aware that I won’t have much influence on your thinking, but there are issues with your assertions that need to be addressed.

While it is true there has been a shrinkage in real wages, etc., I’d have thought that a view of the global situation would put into perspective that it is a global problem, not one, as Peter and Ms Hanson would pretend, brought about solely by our present government.

The issue of wealth distribution is one central to capitalism.

What are Ms Hanson’s solutions? Command economies like Communism?

Ms Hanson’s plans to save money are centred entirely around depriving Australians of the social goods which are the signifiers of an advanced western economy; which our nation has overwhelmingly just approved; and which can not only be afforded, but as was done in the Budget, expanded.

The projected attack on Green policies merely indicates the depth of reluctance to accept established scientific fact about the need for carbon abatement – a case of “I reject the knowledge of people with a life-time’s expertise in favour of my own prejudices”.

It’s a similar case with foreign aid. China had made significant inroads into influence in the Pacific under the conservative viewpoint that aid was wasted; now being reversed through the present government’s understanding of the problem and expanding our aid.

As to “more and more people are abandoning” etc., the fact is that actually, more and more people are abandoning One Nation.

I reiterate Mahatma Ghandi’s dictum – “the measure of a society is reflected in the way it treats its most vulnerable members”.

I am not of the opinion that someone who calls their fellow citizens lazy, singles out particular ethnic groups as targets of injudicious invective, and is also a personal recipient of billionaires’ largesse, is suitable to be heard, let alone supported.
