THE Zonta Club of Coffs Harbour has curated a climate action preparation event that is free for the community to attend.
The morning has been planned to bring together experts in the field of fire and flood with resources to help people become emergency-ready.
It takes place at Woolgoolga Seniors Centre on Boundary Street in Woolgoolga on Wednesday 18 November, starting at 9.00am with an anticipated finish of 1.00pm.
The program includes a showing of Floodland, an intimate 90-minute Australian documentary exploring the aftermath of the 2022 Lismore floods, climate trauma, and community-led paths toward healing.
Presentations include Red Cross EmergencyRedi, by Judy Jackson, who will talk about preparing for emergencies and how to take steps towards building your own individual and household resilience.
The Corindi and Woolgoolga SES presentation, by Wendy Backhous and Paul Maher, will give instructions on how to prepare for severe weather through disaster planning, safety advice and public warning systems.
The project reflects the commitment of Zonta Coffs Harbour to building a better world for women and girls while strengthening local capacity to respond thoughtfully and collectively to emerging climate challenges.
“Climate change does not affect all members of the community equally,” Zonta Club spokesperson Jenny Wiseman told News Of The Area.
“Women, older people and those with caring responsibilities often experience heightened vulnerability during
flooding and climate-related disasters.”
These events can increase personal safety risks, intensify unpaid and often invisible care responsibilities, disrupt employment and income security, and create prolonged stress associated with displacement and recovery.
“There are many reasons why you may need to be safer in your home or leave your home quickly,” Ms Wiseman said.
“The trigger could be a bushfire, storm, flood, extreme heat, power outage, earthquake, tornado, home fire, or even a Tsunami – never say never.”
No matter the cause, the result was the same, she said.
“We need to be ready – but how prepared are we?
“How prepared is your household and community to endure and recover from an extreme weather event?”
The presentations include sharing first-hand experience of emergencies, to help people relate to the importance of being disaster-ready.
Every attendee will take home their own Emergency Planning kit in a Dry Bag for all the important documents. Lucky door prizes include a first aid kit.
The event is sponsored by the City of Coffs Harbour Community Donations Program.
Morning tea will be provided by the Seniors Centre, for a donation.
Registration is essential as numbers for this event are limited.
