ULONG’S new BMX track – christened ‘Mountain Mad Wheels’ – was officially opened on Monday, 23 February
The project’s wheels were set in motion in 2024 when the Eastern Dorrigo Community Hall & Showground Facility Management Committee was awarded a City of Coffs Harbour Community Infrastructure Renewal Grant for $21,723.
This was used for a complete upgrade of the old track facility.
A professional BMX track builder was enlisted and the local management committee project-managed the works.
Fundraising by the committee and donations from committed locals paid for signage and the taming of vegetation bordering the BMX course.
“Projects like this really show what’s possible when a passionate local committee, the community and Council work together,” Mayor Nikki Williams said at the opening.
“It’s a track that’s fun, challenging and designed to build skills, confidence and well-being for all ages.”
The adjacent playground also received a refresh.
Local families helped shape the design, resulting in a modern multi-skill asset with wider appeal than the old playground set-up.
“The previous infrastructure was quite limited and used mostly by only very young kids whereas the new build should be a drawcard for toddlers to teens,” City Planning and Communities Director Ian Fitzgibbon said.
“It’s great to see Ulong getting a fresh playground on the back of similar initiatives at Emerald Beach, Sawtell and watch this space as we build a destination playground at Park Beach.”
