DEAR News Of The Area,
HAVING had two previous letters published in NOTA recently regarding Jetty Dunecare (JDC), I have been criticised for having a conflict of interest in attempting to defend the work and integrity of the group.
In the interest of full transparency, I wish to clearly state my interest in this matter.
I am the owner of one of five bush regeneration businesses employing more than a dozen local restoration professionals working for JDG on 53ha of bushland including behind Boambee Beach.
Since retiring from paid work a year ago, I now work with other volunteers at the Jetty Foreshore providing my services to JDG free of charge.
Rather than a conflict of interest, my professional career and volunteer work over the past three decades is evidence of continuity of a deep consistent interest in our local natural environment and our community.
It seems now the council will continue to go ahead with cuts to funding for JDG, despite numerous representations from the group, members of the public and other councillors.
This decision would appear to be based on incorrect data, resulting in the allegation that JDG represented poor “value for money to rate payers”. The offer by JDG to provide extensive evidence to the contrary has been rejected, along with requests to correct the public record.
The Mayor claims that the decision to uphold funding cuts was not only based on this disputed assessment but to date has been unable to say what other factors were involved.
Could it be that JDG is being punished for opposing the proposed Jetty Foreshore Revitalisation Development?
In addition to the loss of funding, the five independent councillors, who appear to often align with the mayor, have voted against a motion put by Cr Judge to correct the public record, despite what I perceive as an abundance of evidence.
This public record, as it stands, not only degrades the substantial efforts of volunteers but also the reputational capital of the five small businesses employed by JDG.
The Mayor still claims to “value the great work of JDG”. Putting the record straight would be a small gesture of good will, restore the morale of JDG, and cost the rate payers nothing.
Everyone makes mistakes, but failure to take responsibility to put things right, represents an insight into the level of integrity that currently dominates our local council.
Regards,
Lindy Davis,
Moleton.
