WATER will undergo testing after alarmed locals discovered dead eels on the surface of an irrigation pond off Stadium Drive last week.
A council spokesperson said the NSW Environment Protection Authority has been notified of the incident but had advised the kill was a council issue.
Initial water testing by the council on Wednesday indicated pH, conductivity, solids, oxygen levels and temperature were all within normal parameters, although free and total chlorine levels were elevated.
The spokesperson said the council has been authorised to dispose of the dead eels and was actively monitoring the situation.
No information had been provided on the pond’s chlorine levels or the chemical’s origin.
Local conservationist Dave Wood wondered how stringent testing had been, and where the water from the basin flowed.
“Photos show a significant number of what look like quite large eels,” he said.
“We need to know where the chlorine came from and if anyone is to be held accountable.”
