CHUMdog Millionaires have been crowned Men’s Division One Six-a-Side champions after edging Stef and Co 3-2 at Coffs Coast Synthetics on Monday night.
Stef and Co threatened throughout and created several close chances, but the CHUMdog Millionaires goalkeeper produced a series of crucial saves to withstand the pressure and preserve their lead.
The victory capped another successful season for the North Coast Football Six-a-Side competition, with participation continuing to grow.
North Coast Football General Manager Duncan Marchant said the competition had gone from strength to strength.
“We are delighted that in our fourth year of the competition it has grown every year,” he said.
“Playing six-a-side on the all-weather pitch means players have the option to play football all year round.
“It also means that people who work on weekends such as in the hospitality industry or parents who are busy with kids’ sports can also continue to play as the matches are played over 45 minutes on weeknights.”
The competition also provides an opportunity for friends, families and partners to take to the pitch together.
“Having the option of playing with your mates in either men’s, women’s or mixed comps means mates, families or partners can play in the same team, so there is a real emphasis on the social side of football.”
Now in its fifth year, the competition has reached record numbers, with 112 teams registered for the Summer competition.
“We have 112 registered teams for the Summer comp which is the biggest of the year,” Marchant said.
“There’s still a couple of spots left in the girls, 8s, 10s, 12s and 14s which we expect to get gobbled up quickly.
“We have 58 junior teams registered, 22 Men’s, 16 Women’s and 16 Mixed so there’s a great cross-section of players playing during the 11-a-side off season.
“This senior competition will run until March when we kick off the next community football season, so yes, it’s certainly an all-year sport,” concluded Marchant.
