DEAR News Of The Area,
DO we need a migration debate or do we need a migration discussion?
Debate implies conflict and discussion, a learning exercise.
Given that more than a third of our population is either born overseas or from parents who were born overseas and in total more than 95 percent of Australians can trace their ancestors to overseas locations, it is of interest to many.
In any case, before we can have a debate or discussion, we need to tease out possible migration options backed up with costs/benefits and outcomes.
Who is currently doing this work?
It doesn’t seem to be the politicians or the media.
It’s tricky.
As an example, do migrants who pick our blueberries take our houses?
If so and we prioritise housing for locals, who picks our blueberries?
If we want more houses, who is going to build them? Migrants!
What we need, is a considered outcome that continues to build our nation and not one that merely fills a billboard with a catchy slogan.
Regards,
Graeme WILSON,
Coffs Coast.
