MAUREEN Darby was named Sawtellian of the Year 2026, presented by Coffs Harbour Mayor Nikki Williams and Member for Coffs Harbour Gurmesh Singh, at the village Fun Day on Thursday 1 January.

Maureen was nominated by an anonymous community member for leading the Uniting Church of Sawtell’s Uniting U with Friendship, Inspiration and Training program (UUFIT).

In nominating Maureen, the nominee said she transformed the church hall into a multipurpose community hub attracting more than 200 participants each week.

The activities have also led to regular social catch-ups in Sawtell’s main street, with participants forming friendship and support groups that have proved valuable during times of health and financial challenge.

“Maureen has shown the conviction of her belief that community involvement is vital for the welfare of a range of people including those living alone, those with health issues, those with financial issues, those with skills they can share,” the nominee stated.

“Maureen has demonstrated organisational skills and a capacity to manage people, staff schedules and activity schedules and a willingness to be on site to ensure things run smoothly…meeting challenges with unflappable logic.”

Maureen has worked to set up the UUFIT program for the past 10 years.

The program encourages community involvement in a range of activities designed to help with mental and physical health, and social needs.

Activities are aimed at the over 55’s and supported by the church congregation, and members of the wider Sawtell community encompassing Toormina, Boambee east, Boambee, and Bonville.

Maureen has directly established the partnership with Hoys Physio to run strength and balance classes.

She has received and supports proposals from the community and church to run additional activities including mahjong, Tai Chi, afternoon tea, barbecues, a book exchange, table tennis, monthly talks and a choir.

A Christmas gathering for all UUFIT participants, and an annual Lifeline Christmas appeal encouraging people to contribute to Christmas present tubs for families in need has also been organised by Maureen.
