Stars of the Coffs Coast ready to dance for Cancer Council

CANCER Council’s annual Stars of the Coffs Coast Dance for Cancer event is stepping up, with the local “stars” beginning to learn their dance routines.

The June event has a 70s twist and a bold goal: to raise record funds for Cancer Council NSW.

The Stars event, styled on TV’s Dancing with the Stars, began in Coffs Harbour in 2011 as a one-off fundraiser.

It has now grown into the second largest fundraising event for Cancer Council NSW, inspiring similar events across the state.

This year, 11 local “stars” are stepping out of their comfort zones, pairing with professional dancers to learn a routine and perform it live on stage at C.ex Coffs at a finale event in June.

Among the 2025 cast are Jessica Payne from McGrath, teaming up with her sister Erin in a jazz fusion routine inspired by their childhood dance-offs.

Ashlee Downton, also from McGrath, is dancing Burlesque with Rebekah Chippington from Sult Movement in Bellingen.

Nissiah Kirkaldy from Go Vita, is a 19-year-old student dancing in honour of a family friend she calls “the bravest person”.

Daniel Tempest from Stay Ready Performance, is a personal trainer and former footy player taking on pole dancing with plenty of enthusiasm.

Toni Swain from Swaino’s Supper Clubs, is dancing tap with Meredith Ripley.

After completing treatment for lymphoma last year, she knows first-hand how vital cancer support services are.

Behind the scenes, each “star” is supported by a team of local dance teachers who donate their time, energy, and expertise.

Event organiser Lauren Fraser told News Of The Area; “While the night is packed with colour and energy, the cause behind it is serious.

“Cancer touches everyone.

“Our STARS are dancing for their families, friends, clients, and communities.

“Every ticket sold and every dollar donated helps fund research, prevention, advocacy, and support services that directly benefit our local community.”

Tickets can be purchased via the C.ex Coffs box office while those wanting to support the dancers can go to the Stars of Coffs Coast Facebook page or the Cancer Council website.
