BELLINGEN will be the first stop on a regional tour bringing together two of Australia’s leading figures in classical music this October.
Composer Elena Kats-Chernin AO and ARIA Award-winning pianist Tamara-Anna Cislowska will perform at Bellingen Memorial Hall on Wednesday 21 October, opening a four-concert tour of regional NSW.
The performance will see the acclaimed musicians share one piano, playing four hands and presenting a program entirely featuring Kats-Chernin’s music.
Audiences may already be familiar with some of the works, including Eliza Aria, the piece Lloyds TSB took around the world, Russian Rag from Mary and Max, and the score for the Oscar-nominated film Memoir of a Snail.
Cislowska has enjoyed an acclaimed career of her own, having given her first public performance at the age of two, playing Bartók.
She has since won an ARIA Award for Best Classical Album, recorded 11 number one albums, attracts around four million streams annually on Spotify and presents Duet on ABC Classic.
A feature of the pair’s performances is their spontaneity, with no two concerts played exactly the same way.
While a traditional orchestral score can stretch to 80 pages, the musicians work from just a few pages of sketches, rebuilding the music live as they perform.
It means the version heard by the Bellingen audience will be unique to that evening.
The concert is presented by not-for-profit organisation Music in the Regions, which has arranged more than 100 regional concerts, with the Coffs Harbour Music Society helping spread the word locally.
Following Bellingen, the tour will travel to Port Macquarie, Taree and Maitland.
