Woolgoolga Wildcats strengthen third spot with 4-1 victory

THE Woolgoolga Wildcats strengthened their grip on third place in the HIT105.5 Women’s Premier League with a commanding 4-1 victory over Northern Storm on a chilly night at Woolgoolga.

The result, however, was anything but straightforward early on.

Northern Storm stunned the home side inside four minutes when Tiarna Lynch rose highest to head home from a corner and hand the visitors an early lead.

The Wildcats wasted little time responding. Chloe Webb, showing her trademark instincts inside the penalty area, pounced first on a looping cross to fire home the equaliser and restore parity.

After a frantic opening that produced two goals in the opening five minutes, the contest settled into an evenly fought battle, with both sides creating chances in a physical encounter.

But it was the Wildcats who took control after the break.

Woolgoolga dominated the second half, adding three unanswered goals to run away with an impressive 4-1 victory and further strengthen their finals credentials.

The three points all but secure third place, with the Wildcats moving to 20 points -12 clear of fourth-placed Boambee with only a handful of matches remaining.

Elsewhere, competition leaders Urunga Raiders tightened their hold on top spot with a 5-2 win over Boambee, while Coffs City United enjoyed the bye and remain comfortably in second place.
