Yarrila to host a ‘blockbuster’ LEGO-style exhibition based on mini-worlds

THE City of Coffs Harbour has secured a “blockbuster” LEGO-based exhibition called “RELICS: A New World Rises”, which is currently on display at the Australian Museum in Sydney.

Featuring a series of mini-worlds, the exhibition will be open to the public at the Yarrila Arts and Museum (YAM) from 28 March to 19 July.

“It’s a fantastic coup to secure this exhibition and it will delight the local community and draw visitors from all around,” Mayor Nikki Williams said.

RELICS is a story of 12 vintage objects – from an automatic teller machine to a refrigerator – all of which have fallen into disuse after humans left an Earth exhausted of natural resources.

Inside each vintage object is an intricate and magical micro-society.

The immersive mini-worlds are the creation of Perth duo Jackson Harvey and Alex Towler, two mates from high school who shared a childhood love of LEGO and went on to win Channel 9’s LEGO Masters in 2020.

“Kids will get excited by the intricate LEGO, but… the objects themselves are full of nostalgia and the stories we’re telling have a lot of references that only adults will understand,” Alex said.

According to Museum and Gallery Service Leader Carrie Kibbler, YAM has set a high bar by hosting out-of-the-box exhibitions since opening in 2023.

“RELICS will be the latest chapter in that evolving story of pushing boundaries and delivering premium immersive experiences for the community,” she said.

The exhibition is being staged by LEGO® , a trademark of The LEGO® Group, which does not sponsor, authorise or endorse this exhibition.
