Karate champion eyes gold at World Shoto Cup in Mexico

A DEDICATED local martial artist is preparing to represent Australia on the international stage, with his sights firmly set on gold at the upcoming World Shoto Cup in Mexico in 2026.

Sensei Andrew Hall secured his place on the Australian team after a strong 2024–25 competition circuit across Australia.

His recent international success included a silver and bronze medal performance at the 2024 Shoto World Cup in London, demonstrating his continued excellence in high-level competition.

Hall runs a not-for-profit Traditional Shotokan karate club alongside fellow instructor Sensei Alec Shaw.

While the club focuses primarily on traditional training rather than sport karate, its instructors and students regularly step onto the competitive circuit to test the skills and lessons developed in the dojo.

Hall’s karate journey began more than 40 years ago when he first stepped onto the dojo floor at the KUA Dojo in Sandy Beach, training under the late and respected Sensei Rob Walker.

Reflecting on his career, Hall said being able to pass on the lessons learned over four decades of training to current students has become one of his greatest lifetime achievements.

“The martial arts community in this region, regardless of style, has evolved and flourished thanks to the many outstanding instructors who have taught here over the years,” he said.

“It’s something we should all be very proud of.”

In preparation for the 2026 tournament, Hall continues to train with the support of a dedicated local team and ongoing coaching from internationally recognised instructors Sensei Adam and Tracey Pearce.

He also acknowledges the encouragement and guidance from both local and national instructors who continue to support his journey.

With strong community backing and years of experience behind him, Hall hopes to return from Mexico with gold, while showcasing not only his skills but also the strength of the region’s martial arts community and the beauty of the Coffs Coast on the global stage.
