TOORMINA Bushland’s contribution to Clean Up Australia Day resulted in a trailer load of general rubbish, collected within two hours.
The event was organised by local resident Brian Steele and included community members and volunteers from Sawtell Dunecare.
They worked around the Toormina Community Centre.
“While areas adjacent to pathways were generally pretty clean, it was disappointing to find concentrated piles of deliberately dumped household items in bushland,” said Sawtell Dunecare volunteer Dave Wood.
“[There were] large items such as shopping trolleys, long ago dumped in the creek and now embedded in important local riparian habitat.
“In just a couple of hours we had filled the trailer to overflowing with everything from electrical goods, tyres, bicycles, kids’ toys, bags of discarded takeaway dinners, general household waste, dining chairs and a lounge.
“We can all do better and remind the community that you can drop off domestic quantities of electronic and white goods, metal, batteries, paint and oils at the local waste facility, free of charge.”
