Coffs Harbour Music Society Update: Endeavour Trio Concert

COFFS Harbour Music Society’s upcoming concert featuring the Endeavour Trio will proceed despite pianist Stephen Emerson being unable to appear as planned this month, following an accident.

“We are pleased to confirm, however, that the trio’s outstanding remaining members, Paul and Trish Dean, will perform for us instead,” Director of the Coffs Harbour Conservatorium Dr Leigh Summers told News Of The Area.

Preceding the concert at St John Paul College on Saturday 17 October Coffs Harbour Music Society Vice President Robert Smallwood is giving a free pre-concert talk on the night at 6.30pm.

“The three major works on the program are the Bach Cello Suite, the Beethoven Eyeglass Duo and the Ravel Duo Sonata,” Mr Smallwood told News Of The Area.

“I will give some background to each work, play excerpts and introduce the music so that for those hearing this music for the first time, they will have some idea of key things to listen to and enhance their enjoyment.”

Trio member, accomplished cellist, Trish, formerly Trish O’Brien, is known to the area having served for several years as Director of the Coffs Harbour Conservatorium, Dr Leigh said.

“Trish and her husband, composer and clarinettist Paul Dean, have built distinguished international careers as soloists, chamber musicians, orchestral players, and educators.”

Both artists have performed at prestigious venues worldwide, including Carnegie Hall, the Royal Albert Hall, the Kennedy Center, and the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge.

They have collaborated with leading figures such as Alexander Sitkovetsky, Paul Meyer, the Navarra Quartet, and many of Australia’s finest musicians and ensembles.

Trish has served as Principal Cellist with the Sydney, Queensland, and Adelaide Symphony Orchestras.

“Leading Australian composers—including Matthew Hindson, Elena Kats-Chernin, Andrew Schultz—have written works especially for her.

“She has also performed with the Australian World Orchestra, recorded for ABC Classics, and given the Australian premieres of Prokofiev’s Sonata for Solo Cello and Myaskovsky’s Sonata for Cello and Piano.”

Paul Dean is widely recognised as one of Australia’s most versatile and respected musicians, active as a soloist, recitalist, chamber performer, composer, and artistic director. He currently holds the position of Kinnane Professor of Music at the University of Queensland, is Co-Artistic Director of Ensemble Q, conducts the University of Queensland Symphony Orchestra, and performs with the Australian World Orchestra.

He has received numerous prestigious awards.

“Trish and Paul will present a rich, varied program.

“Highlights include Bach’s Suite No. 3 in C Major for solo cello, Beethoven’s Eyeglass Duo, Ravel’s Duo Sonata, plus work by Anne Cawrse and Paul Dean himself.

“This vibrant duo promises a truly memorable evening.”

Dr Summers told NOTA, “If readers have already booked for the original Endeavour Trio concert and would prefer not to attend, please contact the Music Society to arrange a full refund.

“Alternatively, they may choose to exchange their ticket for any future concert of their choice.”
