WHEN it comes to preventing falls, Coffs Neuro Physio believes we should be doing more than simply reacting after an accident.
Their new eight-week program, Balance Ahead, is designed to help people build strength, improve balance and maintain independence before a fall occurs.
Falls are a leading cause of injury among older Australians, often resulting in hospitalisation, reduced mobility and a loss of confidence.
But falling is not an inevitable part of ageing, and there is plenty we can do to reduce the risk.
Recognising the need for a more comprehensive approach, the team at Coffs Neuro Physio has developed Balance Ahead – an innovative, evidence-based program that goes well beyond your average balance class.
Carefully designed by the clinic’s neurological and vestibular physiotherapists, the eight-week program brings together the essential components of balance training in a structured, progressive format.
Participants work on functional strength, mobility, coordination, balance reactions, dual-tasking (moving while thinking) and everyday movements, including safely getting up and down from the floor.
Exercises become progressively more challenging over the eight weeks, helping participants build confidence and maximise improvements.
What really sets Balance Ahead apart is its education component.
Each week, participants explore practical, meaningful topics informed by current falls prevention guidelines, helping them better understand their balance, identify risks and develop strategies to stay safe and independent.
Amanda O’Neill, founder of Coffs Neuro Physio, says prevention is about much more than avoiding injury.
“A fall can have a huge impact on someone’s confidence, independence and quality of life.
“We want people to take control of their balance before a fall changes what they’re able to do.
“We’ve put enormous thought into creating a program that’s challenging, progressive and genuinely makes a difference to everyday life.”
