KNITTING needles, crochet hooks, sketchbooks and stitching came together in Sawtell on Wednesday 29 July for the inaugural Maker Movie Night, a relaxed community event pairing hands-on creativity with a screening of Little Women, at Sawtell Cinema.
Approximately 110 people attended the evening which blended film, creativity, and community, offering a welcoming space for the many makers across the Coffs Coast to gather.
Makers came from Urunga, Lowanna, Bonville, Coffs Harbour and surrounding areas.
The event was initiated by the Knitter Knatters, a small group of Sawtell locals who meet every week to knit together.
Co-organiser Anita Tang, said, “We love our weekly knitting sessions, and thought, ‘imagine how much fun it would be to have a large get-together with other crafters?’.”
Stephanie Sims, the other organiser, had been inspired by similar sessions in capital cities and said the goal was to bring that experience to the region.
“Why should the big cities have all the fun?” she said.
Sawtell Cinema’s manager, Susanne Young, said they were pleased to host this community event.
“We were very excited to offer an experience that brings people together in a relaxed and creative way,” Ms Young said.
“The numbers of people who attended proved that this is a great fit for our community.”
The enthusiasm was strong enough for a new Facebook group, ‘Coffs Coast Crafters and Makers’, to be established to continue the connection online.
Knitter Knatters will continue to meet for casual sessions every Wednesday from 5.30pm in the foyer of the Sawtell Cinema where all crafters are welcome.
