CITY of Coffs Harbour has received more than 800 objections to a proposed 113-lot residential subdivision (0220/25DA) in Sandy Beach, with just one submission received in support.
As previously reported in NOTA, the Sandy Beach community has been vocal in its long-term disapproval of the subdivision proposed by developer Elite Constructions at Ti-Tree Road, which was knocked back by the Northern Regional Planning Panel last year.
The proposal is currently subject to an appeal in the NSW Land and Environment Court.
Residents had the chance to have their say on an amended proposal from 17 February to 17 March via City of Coffs Harbour’s DA tracker.
Sandy Beach Action Group (SANDBAG) Executive Committee member Ian Foskett told News Of The Area, “Congratulations to all those concerned citizens who made submissions, for standing strong and loudly voicing objections to this disastrous development.
“The Hearnes Lake floodplain is no home for houses,” he said.
Elite Constructions has also applied to the Minister for Planning to modify a 2010 Concept Plan approval, the application for which is currently on exhibition via the NSW Planning Portal.
SANDBAG members are currently digesting these concept plan modifications, and are holding information days to discuss and assist locals who wish to make a submission.
The community is invited to attend the Sandy Beach Reserve from 9am to 3pm on Saturday 16 and Sunday 17 May to learn more.
City of Coffs Harbour councillor Jonathan Cassell said the proposed development risks the area’s sensitive environmental values.
“Development within the Hearnes Lake area will clearly further degrade Hearnes Lake but also threaten to harm the incredible flat-top reef that supports nearby fishing, surfing and marine research,” he said.
