BELLINGEN Shire Council are to be congratulated on the fine job they are doing on replacing the old boardwalk over the Urunga lagoon.
It is a quality job, using quality materials and workmanship.
The Council previously refurbished the tidal pool at Mylestom and, in previous years, rebuilt the old sea Lido (the Doughnut) with a new jetty and pontoon for the enjoyment of the residents and visitors.
The council certainly takes pride in their marine assets.
Unfortunately not so with Coffs Harbour City Council where our Historic Jetty continues to fall into disrepair due to the lack of major repairs by successive Councils. It is only a matter of time before a section(s) collapses due to the probable poor state of the piles supporting the structure.
The Council is aware that many of the timber members are beyond their life expectancy( Councils Media release 25 July 2025).
The Council will then be forced to make the decision to either partly demolish or repair the structure, but in order to demolish, the structure may have to be repaired in order to support the demolition equipment and the removal of the demolished components from the site.
Residents are reminded of what our future foreshore could look like if Council proceeds with the building of six multi storey buildings holding up to 450 luxury apartments, all overlooking a harbour minus all or part of our Historic Jetty.
