DEAR News Of The Area,
I WOULD like to share the letter I sent [16 October, 2026] to the Councillors of the City of Coffs Harbour Council:
“I would like to ask you all to support the rescission motion (agenda item 11.1) being put on 22 October to rescind the previous motion R-33-9/2026 that rescinded a previous council declaration of a Climate Emergency and also parts of the Renewable Energy and Emissions Reduction Plan (REERP).
Everything we do as human beings has an impact on our world. If we believe in a fair go for current and future generations, as well as the animals, plants etc. that make up our environment, we must attempt to choose a path that is best for the whole.
Ignoring future impacts may benefit some right now, but, will make the future impacts worse for most people in the future and at a greater cost.
I accept the science behind what is generally referred to as climate change or global warming. The science tells us that the longer we dilly dally around serious actions to reduce the factors causing climate change, the more serious the outcomes.
I would liken the current council position to setting fire to your house on a cold night because it feels a bit cold with no thought to what this means tomorrow.
I accept that the councillors who passed this motion R-33-9/2026 think they are reducing the burden on council budgets and small businesses that supply the council but, if you broaden your horizon to 50 years instead of four, you will see that our house is already starting to burn and we need to control and eventually extinguish the fire.
Yours sincerely,
Michael Faulkner,
Coffs Harbour.
