Letter to the Editor: appeal to Coffs Council to clean disabled toilets

OPEN letter to Coffs Harbour Council

Hello Council, my name is Amelia Ward and I have cerebral palsy.

I am also a frequent participant of Disability Surfing Australia, Mid North Coast contingent, and I am a user of the disabled bathroom.

My [care] worker and I have been down to check out the toilet and shower facility [and found] that the room was dirty and vandalised.

Saturday 3 January [was] the third Disability Surfing Australia meet; the majority of participants are in wheelchairs.

I think it’s the obligation of Council to have the disability toilet up and running to an average standard so that the participants of Disability Surfing Australia, Mid North Coast contingent, can join in.

As a result of the toilet being vandalised, I couldn’t participate.

So, I missed out on having a surf.

I am so annoyed with the bathroom being vandalised as it (surfing) is also a social outlet for me and others.

I would like to know why the disabled bathroom is not locked at night like the other toilets.

It’s the Council’s responsibility to ensure the toilet and bathroom are kept clean and safe for all that use the facility.

It’s a disgrace that the ceiling hoist is nearly rusted and the toilet is never cleaned.

I would like the toilet and shower facility cleaned twice daily and it should be the responsibility of Coffs Harbour City Council.

Amelia Ward
