WOOLGOOLGA volunteer Judith “JuJu” Jackson has spent decades quietly strengthening her community, building connections and supporting others through some of life’s most challenging moments.
Born in Melbourne, Judith moved to the Coffs Coast as a child.
“It has always been home,” she said, reflecting on a lifetime shaped by community values and a strong family focus on giving back.
That commitment has translated into an extraordinary range of volunteer roles across the region, particularly with Australian Red Cross Emergency Services.
From serving as Woolgoolga Branch Secretary for 10 years to leading a team of 13 volunteers today, Judith has helped grow local engagement and resilience.
Her work spans emergency preparedness, community education and disaster recovery, including support during the Black Summer bushfires and local flood events.
She has also contributed to emergency planning committees and initiatives that ensure vulnerable community members are not left behind.
“Helping others keeps me purposeful, grounded, and connected,” Judith said.
“It’s a reminder that giving back isn’t just about what we offer; it’s also about what we gain.”
Beyond emergency services, Judith’s impact reaches into many corners of the community, from multicultural education programs and seniors’ wellbeing initiatives to major local events and grassroots organisations.
Despite her extensive contributions, she describes herself modestly as an “accidental community leader”, with her efforts forming what she calls “a rich and unexpected tapestry of service, learning, and humanity”.
Looking ahead, Judith remains focused on strengthening community preparedness and representation in local emergency management.
Her story is a powerful reminder that strong communities are built by individuals who show up, connect and give their time, often without seeking recognition.
