In an era of rapid change there remain some figures anchored in the collective memory of a town (now city) not just as a well-known name but for their pioneering work.
For Coffs Harbour, the Reverend Don Kemsley, affectionately known across the region as the ‘Push-Bike Preacher’, has such a legacy.
Rev Kemsley’s ministry was never confined to a single pulpit. He found opportunity for his message on the roads he traversed and in the foundations of the institutions he helped establish and that continue to serve the community today.
During his influential tenure at the Coffs Harbour Baptist Church (CHBC), Don, a builder by trade, was a man of significant action.
He was instrumental in supporting the development of Sherwood Cliffs Rehabilitation Centre and oversaw the construction of what was then the congregation’s new church building.
Perhaps his most enduring gift to the next generation was how he helped set in place the development of the Christian school as it is known today, ensuring a legacy of education and faith that continues to flourish decades later.
His heart for the vulnerable led him far beyond traditional religious roles, alongside other members of the church.
He was a collaborator in the inauguration of many Coffs Harbour community service initiatives during the 80’s.
These were not merely projects but essential lifelines for the city, born from a vision of community-wide care and practical support that met people where they were.
Raymond Budge, an Elder at CHBC told News Of The Area that Rev Kemsley was influential through his genuine concern for the people of Coffs Harbour.
“Don’s impact transcends time even though it is almost 40 years since he retired, his life and his care for life is still felt in the lives and organisations he so lovingly shaped with the gospel,” Mr Budge said.
To honour this remarkable life of service, a gathering of friends, family, and former parishioners will be held at Lismore Baptist Church this Saturday, June 13, at 11:00 AM.
The event has been specifically timed to allow those from the Coffs Harbour area to travel and return within the same day, mirroring the same accessibility and thoughtfulness that Don himself practiced throughout his many years of ministry.
