Urunga youth star realises her footy dream

AMAIA Wain has been drafted into the best female Aussie Rules league in the country.

The former Bellingen Bulldogs and Sawtell/Toormina Saints player was selected at pick number four by the Western Bulldogs in the inaugural AFLW pre-season draft.

The 18-year-old was selected by the Bulldogs after a breakout season playing for the University of NSW-Eastern Suburbs Bulldogs in the AFL Sydney Women’s Premier Division.

This included being named amongst her side’s best players in 12 of her 14 games.

The ruck has also been a part of the Sydney Swans Academy in recent years.

The Western Bulldogs described her as “a ruck with unique attributes and an impressive vertical leap”.

“Her endurance and versatility means she can also cover the wing, forward, or even half-back where she can use her leap to intercept.”

Wain brings impressive athleticism and a great vertical leap to the Bulldogs, having made the state finals of the high jump as a junior.

Playing locally for both the Bellingen Bulldogs and Sawtell/Toormina Saints in 2024, she became the first player to win both the AFL North Coast’s Youth Girls 17s and Senior Women’s Best & Fairest awards in the same year.

The Urunga resident has also been a key member of North Coast Force junior representative teams.
