A MAN has faced court this week accused of an alleged murder at an Ebor campground.
Ahwen Kohn, 26, appeared in the crime court at Armidale on Tuesday, charged with “murder”, “intentionally choke person with recklessness”, and “assault occasioning actual bodily harm’.
Mr Kohn was arrested on Waterfall Way, Ebor about 11.30am on Monday, 2 March, following police investigations into an overnight incident at the Little Styx River Campground in Ebor.
Emergency services had been called to Thora, 25km northwest of Bellingen, shortly after midnight on Monday, where NSW Ambulance paramedics found a 33-year-old man had died after suffering critical head injuries.
Officers attached to New England Police District were told the man had allegedly been struck with an axe about 10.30pm on Sunday while camping in Ebor with two friends.
A female friend of the victim, 25, had then driven the man from Ebor to Thora to seek help.
She told police she had also been assaulted and was treated for bruising to her neck.
A crime scene was established at the campground off Point Lookout Road, Ebor, about 80km east of Armidale, and New England detectives – with assistance from State Crime Command’s Homicide Squad – commenced an investigation into the incident under Strike Force Ullmark.
Following his arrest, Mr Kohn was taken to Armidale Police Station and charged.
Refused bail during his Tuesday court appearance, he will reappear at Armidale crime court on 22 April
