LOCAL families, nature lovers and community members are invited to a Mother’s Day Picnic on Sunday, 11 May in support of a campaign to “Save Mount Coramba”.
The free, family-friendly event will run from 10:00am to 2:00pm outside the East Bank Fire Station and will offer a mix of creativity, nature, and community connection, with a ‘playful nod’ to the environmental message of Dr Seuss’s Lorax, who will be making a special guest appearance.
A spokesperson for Friends of Orara East State Forest said, “This picnic is not only a celebration of mums and families, but also a peaceful stand to protect one of our region’s natural treasures – Mt Coramba
“Come with a picnic rug, your kids, your community spirit – and help us speak for the trees.”
Event highlights include clay ‘forest creature’ making, face painting and banner painting.
Tea and coffee will be provided and participants are asked to bring a plate to share with neighbours.
Mount Coramba is the most prominent feature above the Orara Valley to the west of Coffs Harbour, and is clearly visible from right across the Northern Beaches of the Coffs Coast and further afield, with the readily recognisable conical peak jutting prominently above Coramba Village.
The Friends of Orara East State Forest say the area is a globally significant koala stronghold and a key part of the proposed Great Koala National Park (GKNP).
The mount is also an immensely significant cultural landscape sacred to the Garlambirla and Garby people of the Gumbaynggirr Nation.
